The Wrestler (2008)

Darren Aronofsky

Throughout The Wrestler, we are immersed into the life of Randy "The Ram' Robinson, an old washed up Wrestler living in the dumps who wears a hearing aid. We are confronted by his troubles and caught up in his loneliness. His lack of family around him and health issues that force him to retire from wrestling help build up a slow paced film that makes the viewer feel strongly towards Randy.

We are literally put into Randy's footsteps due to the various shots Aronofsky has produced. As he experiences different emotions, the camera follows him much of the time that almost resembles a point of view feeling. The difference to the camera following Randy and a POV shot, even though we can only see the back of Randy head, is that I feel like I am with Ram. From utter sadness suffering a heart attack and struggling to run, to sheer euphoric following him through the crowd and into the wrestling ring. I felt that i had learnt so much about the strength and goodness of this character through following him.

This technique is something i have previously tried during my dissertation film and a promotional video i made for Loco during this year. As i am exploring a deeper emotion with my character for my FMP, i will look to build on this technique to enforce the emotional ride he goes through on his journey.
