Moral Kombat Film

We watched a movie in class on the thoughts of journalists, game makers, critics and people within the game industry on game developing and the effects games has on us growing up.
I took down notes, quotes and opinions of others being interviewed.

Whoever tells the story defines culture
In a position of creator of the universe
What is media doing to our kids/what is kids doing to our media?
What do we do in media is very different in our everyday life
Diversity of experience by having choice
Learn by doing, creator of action computer, the medium of doing TV, the medium of viewing
What is the effect of these games?
In order to look forward, we have to look back, what has been done right and what has been done wrong?

Looking at mortal combat
8 million people bought the game in 1993
It was played solely in arcade before the release of homes a year before
Was one of the most successful arcade games
People would crowd round the machines to see the gamers fight

Like free speech, if the public are warned about the content before hand, then people know what to expect

Doom - a first person shooter, aim to kill people as fast as possible, evolved into a game called quake only difference is your playing against different people

'Life is like a video game, everybody's gotta die at sometime'

Do games create youth violence?

Sychological view between films and games are different, you can almost direct your own games

Teens are more likely to copy cat something they've seen than adults due to a study at Harvord in 1999

'You are what you intend to be, so be careful who you pretend to be'

A true story, a man wrote in a letter to produce of 'Abe Oddysee', who was virtually on brink of suicide due to relatives passing away, had played this game and mentioned how it was the first time this guy had smiled in a long, long time. The producers we're inspired and said that the aim was to be able to change peoples lives.
Video games = Escapism, entertainment

The ability to portray better graphics and show more realistic scenes and become more capable, suddenly they are less acceptable to the public

90% of the states read comic books, reduced to 500,000 people to date

As artists we want to get to the position where everybody's grown up on games and understand the concept, and appreciate the creations. We don't want any barriers on game laws.

The game industry grows as the public grows

Human nature attracted to violence; news, papers, movies, novels, books, games, for example usually when a crash happens, there is miles of traffic as everybody driving past wants to see what's going on.

The movie itself was very insightful, it made me look back and think of situations i've been in that perhaps an event in my life was inspired because what i had done/seen in a game. It's interesting to hear other peoples views on games and what their thoughts we're playing particular games in comparison to my own views. I've whitnessed games getting the better of peoples emotions and mine included, dictating moods and for my personal example, fifa makes me want to play football and try new skills i see being done. Hopefully i can take the information shared on board and be inspired to create a game that effects peoples lives in a positive way.
