Tom Evans

Start at the bottom

No experience is bad experience

Diversity - don't stick your eggs in one basket

Always have a back up plan

Work experience!!! however it can be rubbish

Make an effort - with work experience you get out what you put in.

Bonding and relationships

GET YOURSELF REMEMBERED

See your first job as a test.

Dont expect your first job to eb glamorous

Practise being fast - enter competitions, ask for large briefs, give yourself targets.

PUSH YOURSELF/CHALLENGE YOURSELF

Keep learning - Just because you've started work, doesn't mean you stop learning.

Make the most of the people around you

People love talking about their job, practitioners love talking about their work. BE PASSIONATE

Keep talking about the stuff you are interested in.

Prepare for setbacks

Think about what you want

Do research - find out about choices what you've got, so you can make informed decisions.

QUESTION - WHEN QUITTING TO GO TRAVELLING, WERE YOU WORRIED YOU'D COMPLETELY PART FROM THE INDUSTRY, FORGET SOFTWARE & SKILLS?

Answer: Like riding a bike, forgets things quickly but when going back to the software you look at it from a different angle.

There are more roles than you know!

DONT BURN BRIDGES

Freelancing different from fulltime work.
- better pay freelancing
- more creative control and freedom
- time to do own stuff when you want
- freelancing not for everyone
- no sick leave, no holiday, no pension
- staying on top of things can be tricky

Learn to talk - Practice!

Learn to write (and know your audience)

BE PROACTIVE - DONT SIT ON YOUR ASS AND BE LAZY!!!!!

Meet interesting people - networking events, festivals, conferences - ask questions and show and interest

Make most out of networking - listen to people! Take stuff in - BE A SPONGE soak stuff in

Can be really frustrating to get into the industry, be patient, and enjoy it!
