Billy Clay at the Leeds college of art, was producing a 15 minute comedy sketch had organised a crew that consisted of 15 people. Each were assigned to specific roles within the crew and I was a runner that assisted the lighting gaffer, DOP and sound technician. It taught me that each person in the crew has an important part to play and that if one person is slacking, they will be letting the whole production down. Filming days are quite intense and if project management and organisation isn't planned properly, the crew can get agitated and restless.
The chemistry on set seemed to flow and everybody was bouncing off eachother when the evenings turned into nights, we had to keep one another entertained. Each individual's goal was to help the director succeed in achieving a specific style of filming to bring out the comedy. To have an idea of theme Billy was aiming for I watched some comedy programes recommended by himself called Workaholics and Trailer Park Boys. This helped prepare myself for any ideas Billy asked me to throw his way in terms of camera work and making the sketch flow better.
Aswell as Billy, I assisted a friend of mine, Sam Klein, at the Leeds Met. It was a completely different type of production as it was just him directing, the actor and myself. The concept behind the idea was Aidan, the actor, was trapped inside his head and we used a hall way in student halls for the location. I had to assist by deciding on what lighting was best to help emphasise a dreamy-world effect. The hallways left us with limited options of camera shots so i was experimenting with different angles of camera shots that we felt worked best for the production. The video can be seen at the bottom of the post.
