Michel climent interview (youtube)

"We made models of the rooms in the hotel. First of all we decided since it was a supernatural that we didn't want to have any impressionistic sets of an art directors idea of what a hotel full of ghosts would look like, we wanted it to look like a real hotel. This also carried forward into the lighting and everything else. It always seemed to me that the guide for this sort of thing was the way Kafka writes."

Kubrick on The Shining - interview with Michel Climent

I thought it was one of the most ingenious and exciting stories of the genre I had read. It seemed to strike an extraordinary balance between the psychological and the supernatural in such a way as to lead you to think that the supernatural would eventually be explained by the psychological: "Jack must be imagining these things because he's crazy". This allowed you to suspend your doubt of the supernatural until you were so thoroughly into the story that you could accept it almost without noticing.

We wanted the hotel to look authentic rather than like a traditionally spooky movie hotel. The hotel's labyrinthine layout and huge rooms, I believed, would alone provide an eerie enough atmosphere. This realistic approach was also followed in the lighting, and in every aspect of the decor it seemed to me that the perfect guide for this approach could be found in Kafka's writing style.

The Shining could not have had the same lighting if it had been filmed on location, and because of the snow effects it would have been extremely impractical to do it that way. We would have been far too much of a nuisance in a real hotel, and in the case of those which were shut in the winter, they were closed because they really were inaccessible.

Did you have all those extras pose for the last shot?

No, they were in a photograph taken in 1921 which we found in a picture library. I originally planned to use extras, but it proved impossible to make them look as good as the people in the photograph. So I very carefully photographed Jack, matching the angle and the lighting of the 1921 photograph, and shooting him from different distances too, so that his face would be larger and smaller on the negative.

(my own comments)
kubricks slow pacing is made up  for the fascinating environments, gripping writing and engaging camera work to incite you and leave you wanting to know every detail in the scene

He allows objects within the scene to become characters within themselves by bringing various parts of the environement to life

(notes)
1. mum speaking to counselor - counselor has bright light behind her as shes regarded highly by wendy (the mum)

2. Golden hallway, yellow/gold lighting when he wants a drink, starts talking to lloyd (imaginary friend)

3. The red toilet scene Jack meets Mr Grady. Mr Grady is facing away from the light, talking to Jack, spoon feeding Jack information. There is no source to reflect light back to Mr Grady, leaving his eyes with large shadows. In contrast to this, Jack is facing Mr Grady and the light source behind Mr Grady is lighting up Jacks face. It is almost like Jack is purposely being lit to convey a lightbulb has switched in his brain and he is coming up with ideas - from what Mr Grady is telling him. We can see in each of Jacks pupils quite clearly, 3/4 of the lights sources from behind Mr Grady. This hyperreal scene is lit to exaggerate Jacks fantasy world of his imagination, yet it's all with natural lighting to keep the scene look realistic and allow the audience to make up their own minds whether Mr Grady is actually there or not.

4. There is only one lights source coming from the hall way in scene where Danny claims it's not him screaming out silly things and scarring his mum, Wendy. The hard light, which looks natural, is contrasted by the harsh shadow that looks exaggerated, and by keeping Wendy in the dark its as if she doesnt know what is happening to her son. Danny is clearly highlighted with 2/3 of the light hitting his face, but Its the mysterious shadow of the bed and Dannys imaginary friend Tony that are the two stand out characters in this scene.

5.

6. Jack forces Wendy to walk backwards up the stairs, the higher she gets up the stairs, the more red the light gets, the more you feel Jack is about to attack her even though she has a baseball bat in her hands.
