Short film first Idea About a Gambler

In the summer of 2013 I wanted to enter into a competition for Bafta short films. I made a status on facebook asking to see if anyone would be interested in making a short film and entering together. A friend of mine, Effi Carlebach, got in contact with me to say he would be up for making something together. We met up in London and discussed ideas of a psychological change of emotion of a character.

I am able to get camera equipment such as a 5D mark iii, lights and lenses from my uni so it makes more sense to film in Leeds.

Entry for the British Short Film and British Short Animation categories at the upcoming EE British Academy Film Awards opens on Monday 12 August and will close at 12:00 GMT on Wednesday 30 October.

casino royal (more bond movies)
lock stock – when he loses & when they celebrate

the beach – clip where di caprio goes to bangcock to get shopping, he is tripping out that the real world is shit

Fear and loathing – del torro and johnny depp are seeing crazy visuals having virtually out of body experiences.

Gambling

Book called the arcade project – walter Benjamin

Hungarian lord biggest gambler in paris
Plays millions in one hand
Coolest calmest guy
Sits at table, elegant, paris 19 century
Hand inside of pocket – looks cool and calm
His servant later told everyone he used to come home and have blood on his finger nails – not calm at all, was so nervous, would dig his nails into his chest – extreme!

Process of revocation
You think everything is one way – and then you find out it’s something else

Revealing two fantasies –
Small revolutions of every gamble
Long revolution of the game

Theadore adorno – jewish theorist
Him and Benjamin had letter correspondence arguing about kafka – a Czech writer early 20th century about things that seem completely fantastic/not real a guy that wakes up one morning and turns into an insect – Benjamin said instead of that being fantasy it should be real. When you exchange something in a market with some one, money is raised to

Transmogrified  - transform in a surprising or magical manner.

Gambling, capitalism, make reality seem fantastical and make fantastical seem real
Moment of transformation, looking like you could have a straight or flush but then fait lands you the wrong card
You elevate the money from level of extreme meaning
Whole gamble is contained within itself
With gambling you use money which is a fake constructive thing for fake value, but you use chips
Transform chips into money – supernatural
Warped reality

story

Retrospective – show me your hand, metaphor for cards/hand language for show me your hand, real hand aswel as cards

Embarrassment
Paranoia
Addiction
Intense
Natural reaction
Subconscious what hes doing
Not thinking about it
Difficult to control

Another way in which gambling – where a metaphor becomes real – what we are showing is that its not a metaphor at all, the cards actually become your hand, like the chips becomes £100 for instance. Reality is changed by that process.

Change of emotion – change of reality/fantasy

Before the last card comes up, the reality where u think you’ve won hangs in the air.

Everytime you gamble it creates two possibilities – and one of the possibilities collapses

Casino is altered reality – in Vages its only ever nighttime, always only serving dinner because they don’t want people thinking its morning. Argument is its 10am outself its daylight, when your in the casino your thinking its 10pm and its dinner time – you believe the fake constructed reality nighttime.

Casino as film set – casino managers –are genies lighting artists – making the gamblers believe its nighttime – lighting of slot machines – tables are lit, how to they light the poker table to the roulette wheel – different kind of reality’s that they are trying to portray – as a casino you want people to be in a different mindset from a roulette table to a poker table – colour schemes – black, red, green

People, women next to him drags the chips towards him as he sits up straight with his hand by his chest
Always smiling
Close up of hands, side on
Close up of hands behind the shoulder to reveal cards
Table high shots
To add suspense show other characters reactions or non reactions
Birdseye view of table

When paranoid, montages of everyone starring down the table appear, effects – table stretches longer
